Soda Shop

By Jay Brannan

The sidewalk is rushing at my head again
I’m lying on the street in the rain and wind
From doing forward rolls down Avenue A
With my guitar on my back don’t let it end this way

Somehow I dialed my cell
I didn’t know I could get service in hell
How quickly can you get here
Don’t know where I am dear
Finally the world actually seems to be revolving around me

Chorus:
Shoo-be-doo-be-doo-wop
I overdid it at the soda shop
Thanks for being my girl at the
I don’t know when to stop sock hop

You held my head over the edge of the bed
I remember it now but at the time I thought I was dead
You put a pan there and held back my hair
How could I repay you for saving me and my hardwood floor?

And when the world stops spinning ’round
I picked up pan above the ground
I read my upheaves much like tea leaves
They said it’s over so get sober or you’ll die….
Again……

The Good Life

The Good Life - Five Times August

Early morning into afternoon
Im waiting for you
Waiting for you to get up
I sit up, I dont know what to do
But Ive got a lovely view from here

Lazy days the lovely ways of you
Im telling the truth
Cause Im well into you
And I cant decide, and its blowing my mind if I
Had the time of my life last night

Cause Im so tired of love hesitating
Its got me hanging around
And were so close together
But wont get any better
Till your open eyes say your mine

Cause Ive seen the light come in through the white blinds
As you pull the covers in over your eyes
You cant to get back to the moonlight
And you feel the breeze come in through the window
Im gonna lean on over quiet and whisper
Staying in bed is the good life

So Ill move a little closer, try to make the most of this
And Ill be damned if I dont leave without a kiss
Youre the creation of my frustration
And the result of my temptation
So wake up baby, lets start the day right now
Wake up baby lets start the day right now

Cause Im so tired of love hesitating
Its got me hanging around
And were so close together
But wont get any better
Till your open eyes say your mine

Cause Ive seen the light come in through the white blinds
As you pull the covers in over your eyes
You cant to get back to the moonlight
And you feel the breeze come in through the window
Im gonna lean on over quiet and whisper
Staying in bed is the good life

As I feel you roll beside me
Those little sweet nothings are giving me something worth while

Cause Ive seen the light come in through the white blinds
As you pull the covers in over your eyes
You cant to get back to the moonlight
And you feel the breeze come in through the window
Im gonna lean on over quiet and whisper
Staying in bed is the good life

I Really Want You

Many prophets preach on bended knee
Many clerics wasted wine
Do the bloody sheets
On those cobbled streets mean
I have wasted time

Are there silver shores on paradise?
Can I come in from the cold?
I killed a man in a far away land
My enemy I'm told.

I really want you to really want me
But I really don't know if you can do that
I know you want to know what's right
But I know it's so hard for you to do that
And time's running out as often it does
And often dictates that you can't do that
But fate can't break this feeling inside
That's burning up through my veins

I really want you
I really want you
I really want you now

No matter what I say or do
The message isn’t getting through
And you’re listening to the sound
Of my breaking heart

I really want you
I really want you

Is a poor man rich in solitude?
Or will mother earth complain
Did the beggar pray for a sunny day but
Lady luck for rain

They say a million people bow and scrape
To an effigy of gold
I saw life begin
And the ship we're in
And history unfold

I really want you to really want me
But I really don't know if you can do that
I know you want to know what's right
But I know it's so hard for you to do that
And time's running out as often it does
And often dictates if you can't do that
But fate can't break this feeling inside
That's burning up through my veins

I really want you
I really want you
I really want you now

No matter what I say or do
The message isn't getting through
And your listening to the sound
of my breaking heart (x2)

The Tragedy of Being Roy Cleveland Sullivan.

Roy Cleveland Sullivan was an interesting man. I have not met him but I will always remember his story. He died when I was almost three years old, and no he doesn't know me but his story was something I will never forget. Roy Cleveland Sullivan was a different man. He was called the "Human Lightning Rod" having the outrageous misfortune of being struck by lightning a record 7 times and lived through each ordeal.

He was a US park ranger at the Shenandoah National Park in Virginia. In 1942, Sullivan was hit for the first time when he was at the fire lookout tower. The lightning bolt struck him in a leg and he lost a nail on his big toe. The year was 1969 when he got struck again while he was driving his truck in a mountain road. It knocked him unconscious and burned his eyebrows. The following year wasn't exactly luckier for him either as he was struck again burning his left shoulder while he was on his front yard.

1972 came and he got struck again at the ranger station, burning his hair. This was a sudden turning point for him - he started carrying a bucket of water with him. August 7th of the following year, the bucket of water didn't come in handy as he was blasted out of his car by another strike and set his hair on fire once again.

While on a campground in June 5th of 1974, he noticed a cloud who seemed to follow him, tried to run away but he got struck by another bolt again injuring his ankle. On June 25th 1977, his last and final lightning strike occured while he was fishing - hospitalizing him for burns on his chest and stomach.

It may be hilarious and all to think that getting hit 7 times by a lightning is weird and amusing- after all according to the National Geographic's Flash Facts about Lightning, the odds of being struck in a lifetime is three-thousand to one. If the different events of "being struck by lightning" were statistically independent the chances of being struck seven times in a lifetime are about sixteen-septillion to one.

But the real tragedy of Roy Cleveland Sullivan was not because he got hit 7 times by a lightning. Less than two months before my 3rd birthday, on September 28, 1983 - Roy Cleveland Sullivan died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound reportedly distraught over unrequited love.

Roy Cleveland Sullivan proved that indeed, love was the strongest force of nature.
