Asia's First Airline Makes It To World Airline Rankings!

Okay so, it has been ages that I flew Philippine Airlines (PAL)... but this is a piece of good news. With one of the most experienced pilots in the world, PAL has shed the stigma of being a formally state-owned company with its inherent defects to be finally a profitable airline. If I had to choose between PAL and Cebu Pacific, I'd fly PAL only if it can compete with the low-cost fares of Cebu Pacific. PAL is Asia's first airline and also Asia's first to cross the Pacific.

MANILA, Philippines -- Philippine Airlines made it to the 2006 World Airline Rankings, a ranking of the top 150 airlines in the world, acknowledged as the most comprehensive survey of the airline industry as compiled by the respected aviation journal Airline Business.

PAL was the only Philippine airline included.

PAL ranked 61st in terms of revenue passenger kilometers (RPKs), the industry yardstick for passenger traffic, with over 16 million RPKs flown in 2006.

That put the flag carrier ahead of such Asian peers as Garuda Indonesia (64th place) and Vietnam Airlines (78th), European rivals Scandinavian Airlines (85th) and CSA Czech Airlines (99th), and U.S. regional carriers Hawaiian Airlines (82nd) and Continental Micronesia (134th).

PAL also flew a little over 21 million available seat kilometers (ASKs) -- the industry measure for total seat capacity offered -- in 2006, which, taken with its 16 million RPKs flown, meant that PAL operated flights close to capacity.

PAL also chalked an average load factor of 76 percent to earn a place as among the highest in the survey, matching or surpassing survey leaders British Airways (76 percent), Lufthansa (75 percent) and Japan Airlines (68.5 percent).

In terms of revenue, PAL was 68th in the rankings, with $1.39 billion earned last year. This enabled PAL to outstrip fellow legacy carriers Gulf Air (69th), Garuda Indonesia (76th), Brazil’s Varig (80th) and the UAE’s Etihad Airways (101st).

Among Asia-Pacific carriers, PAL’s revenue performance landed it 20th place in a highly competitive group that included two of the top ten airlines in the world, headed by Japan Airlines.

The survey results were published in the August 2007 edition of Airline Business, which is based in the United Kingdom. Both members and non-members of the International Air Transport Association (IATA) were equally rated.

  1. i've always been flying PAL domestically (sometimes around Asia) with their safety record in mind . . . it pays too, with the mileage card, they've flown me home to Roxas and back for free, many times over the years

  2. Unfortunately I am a Cebu Pacific fan after all it was my account and we helped transform it into a leading airline contender. But PAL has the cutest flight attendants though.

  3. I flew PAL twice last year... NEVER AGAIN. Sorry, but the airline truly redefined the definition of "crap".

  4. Yeah, PAL has a very good safety record, and they have one of the smoothest landings and takeoffs ever. Cebu Pacific is a bit spotty when it comes to these crucial parts of flight. Regarding PAL's Mabuhay Miles- the problem was that PAL doesnt have a mileage collaboration with other airlines so it doesnt add up to your points and that poses a problem if you fly to destinations not served by PAL.

  5. Yeah, Cebu Pacific doesnt seem to have good looking FAs. LOL. Wow, Cebu Pac was your account? Well it does help you know they have games onboard, tho they should actually try something more fun... Ive been flying Cebu Pacific for a long time and they are not really as punctual as they would like to advertise themselves. In fact, prolly half of the times I flew with them, the flights were delayed. The refleeting program has been finished tho, and its really nice that they had been opening new destinations like Guangzhou, Shanghai and others.

  6. Aww.. any horror story?? whatever happened?

  7. The refleeting makes them the youngest airline in the planet!!! Sana they get cuter FAs. Super guwapo nung mga nasa PAL kasi hahaha

  10. In the past two decades, I've flown with PAL more than any other airlines...both international and domestic...and being a Mabuhay Miles member allowed me to fly several trips for free...I must say, PAL ranks high in comparison to Lufthansa, Cathay Pacific, Qantas, British Airways....

  11. I am a loyal Marco Polo Gold Club member and for my overseas trips and sorties, I use Cathay. But for short asian trips for example, I take advantage of PAL because they Have the direct flights. (no need to pass through Bangkok, to go back to Manila from one asian country) plus the mileage automatically gives me at least one round trip ticket from Manila to Roxas (my hometown for just 6000 km)

As for crap. try American Airlines and Lufthansa.

  12. haven't had a bad experience with PAL, tho that could probably be explained by the fact that I only with them once internationally and just twice domestically. As for my other International travel, I use either Cathay or Singapore Airlines. =)

  13. PAL? never again...... better try Cathay Pacific or Singapore Airlines.... far more better than PAL...

  14. I flew PAL this October. actually, I think they are better than Cebu Pac. Well CX and SQ is def better than PAL, but support our national carrier diba?

  15. Oh yeah, to think of it, CX lost a lawsuit filed by a Filipino couple who got denied the VIP Lounge even if they were eligible.

  16. well, i dont know if PAL can regain my trust.... after they spit on my fathers´dinner meal.... very serious and very bad than being revoked of a vip access... there you have it....

  17. You'd wish they do it to you. They just won millions on that lawsuit. ;)

  18. That's terrible.. hmm.. how did this happen? But yeah, spitting on food is not new in restaurants - especially for those who are difficult customers. Not saying it's right, but it does happen. So I usually am extra nice to that waiter. :)

  19. we have no idea.. we just noticed something slimy and bubbly. my younger brother touched it and rubbed it, giving an awful smell. my father never argued nor had a problem with the staff. crew old and where not approachable and where sobbish at that time. BA crew are more lovely even they´re old. my father was concorde pilot for British Airways during the 90`s. hoping to follow steps (not as a pilot but as cabin crew).

  21. Nice. but BA is bleeding dry now financially. Most European airlines are anyway. In the US, airlines are bleeding too. Major growth area is AP at this point.

  22. well, but some asian airlines have also reported drop in passenger growth like singapore airlines and cathay.... cx for example has stopped hiring in all departments i heard. JAL also has reported negative feedbacks... it means the crisis has hit all of the aviation sector not only europe or US but also asia pacific. luckily i´ve got my call from BA this morning and i´ll get my wings this first week of january.....

  23. Philippine aviation though is doing quite well although PAL reported a higher net loss this year because of the spike in the price of oil.
