Manila Ocean Park - One of Asia's Biggest and Best

Manila Ocean Park

The Philippines' first world-class oceanarium owned by China Oceanis Philippines Inc., a subsidiary of China Oceanis Inc., a Singaporean-registered firm that has operated four oceanariums in China. It is currently under construction behind the historical Quirino Grandstand at the Rizal Park.

Construction composed of three phases:

First Phase - Oceanarium and is set to open on December 2007. The MOP oceanarium is said to be bigger than Sentosa's Underwater World oceanarium in Singapore in terms of floor area - 8,000 square meters (Sentosa Underwater World has 6,000 square)

Second Phase - includes the marine-themed mall and the hotel, to open next year in 2008.

Third Phase - the open marine habitats which is also set to open in 2008.

Manila Ocean Park is divided into sections:

1. Agos (Flow) - a rainforest motiff complete with 8 tanks of freshwater fishes.

2. Bahura (The Reef) - exihibition of artificial corals in 48 tanks

3. Laot (Fishing Ground) - will feature big fish and Eagle-spotted rays in a long tank.

Main attraction

MOP's main attraction of the oceanarium is a 25-meter long walkway tunnel with 220-degree curved acrylic walls similarly seen in Hong Kong Ocean Park, Singapore's Underwater World in Sentosa and Malaysia's Aquaria. The difference between MOP's is a 220-degree curved tunnel as compared to the standard 180-degree curved tunnels seen in other Asian countries

The oceanarium at Manila Ocean Park will be one of the biggest and most advanced in Asia.

Walk Faster, Bitch!

I am a fast walker. I am the fastest walker I know. A Belgian friend once told me that no one has ever walk faster than he does. Apparently he has met his match.

For me, walking is getting from point A to point B. And I'll try my damn best to get to that other point fast..and when I walk could probably illustrate my own best example of lifehacking:  straight and direct to the point.

But walking in crowded streets can be a bit of a challenge for me- Thanks to people who seems to hog the whole freakin' road and walking as fast my dead granny (Bless her soul). That is totally disrespectful for other people! Don't you feel that you may want to whack slowpokes in front of you sometimes? I know I do.

A couple of days ago, I was walking on the overpass from Landmark to Greenbelt, and amidst the throng of slowpokes, there was this a group of yuppy wannabes who seemed to hog all the freakin way mindless of the lunchtime rush. As I was totally pissed, and he was on my right of way, I walked straight and geared myself to a collision and BAM! I smacked my shoulder into that annoying piece of shit and without looking back I continued walking as if nothing happened. My friend who was right after me broke into a smile (He was a fast walker himself) when he saw that guy's mad expression on his face. Come on, WALK ON YOUR SIDE OF THE ROAD BITCH! So if you are that ugly motherfucker on a pink shirt and tie two days ago, I hope you'd probably learn your damn lesson.

Years ago, I once muttered, "Walk faster!" while I was walking in the streets of Salcedo Village- the lady in front of me almost jumped to one side when she heard it. Yeah right, baby, this is not a public park, move your smelly arse away from my rampaging presence.

According to a study, people are actually 10% walking faster now compared to a decade ago.

This is actually very surprising as I dont find Singaporeans walk that fast at all.. Or I haven't noticed? No wonder I never had complaints walking in the Lion City. The Chinese on the other hand are very rude pedestrians. They would push and shove if necessary (and they aren't that fast walkers themselves!) - they would actually run you down with their mangy bikes!

So whatever it is, it is just common courtesy everywhere that it if you are a slow walker, make sure you stay on the side of the road reserved for you, don't hog the whole freakin' road, because next time baby, you will get to know me better, after I ran you over. ;)

The Barong Tagalog - The Proud Filipino Fashion

The Barong Tagalog is the National Attire of the Philippines (worn usually by men). Elegant and priced highly, it is usually worn during weddings, and formal occasions. The most expensive of the bunch can fetch up to thousands of pesos. Probably the Barong is the only other National Attire that can rival the tuxes in elegance and universal nature of its usage. Foreigners can wear this attire without looking ridiculous and there is nothing more dapper than being clad in the finest pineapple silk (woven by the weavers of Aklan) and the magnificent embroidery. I am a big fan of the Barong, and contrary to an 2007 APEC in Sydney, information materials described of the shirt as a "peasant shirt", Barongs are expensive  and commands a high price and spells prestige to those who wear it.

This Filipino tradition dates back to the Spanish Colonial era. A legend persists that the Spaniards made Filipinos wear barongs untucked to distinguish them from the ruling class, its translucent fabric helping the Spaniards to see that the wearer was not bearing any weapon under the garment.

Sociologists have argued against this theory, however, pointing out that untucked wear was very common in pre-colonial Southeast and South Asian countries, and that the use of thin, transcluencent fabric developed naturally given the heat and humidity of the Philippines. Historians, likewise, have noted the absence of a citation to the specific law where the Spaniards supposedly prohibited the natives from tucking in their shirts. They also note that natives during the Spanish Era wore their shirts tucked at times. A common example cited in support of this argument is José Rizal and his contemporaries, who were photographed in Western clothing with their shirts tucked — although the era of the barong predated Rizal's time.

Another disputed theory is whether the barong was a local adaptation or a precursor to the guayabera, a shirt popular in the Latin American communities. According to those who claim that the barong is the precursor of the guayabera (pronounced "gwa-ya-ber-ra" with an almost silent "G"), the guayabera shirt was originally called "Filipina" during the era of Manila Galleon tradeships when it was brought to Mexico from the Philippines. "

There are different fabrics used for the Barong,

1. Piña (Pineapple) Fabric - The most expensive of the lot. APEC leaders wore this during the the `96 Summit in the Philippines as their official costume for the group's photo op. Since then, no one has equalled the elegance of that APEC Photo Op.  The cheapest Piña Barong would set you back about PHP3000. About USD68.88 at 44PHP - 1USD Exchange Rates. Normally the mid-level Barongs would at least command 3 times that price.

2. Jusi Fabric - This is mechanically woven and made from Abaca fabric. But since the '60s has been replaced by the imported Organza Fabric. (Organza fanfare was shortlived though, and got stuck in the campy '80s.)

3. Banana Fabric - is another sheer fabric used in formal occasions. Made and hand woven from banana fiber, and usually comes with geometric design details. This fabric comes Negros Island.

4. Piña-Jusi - this combination is one of the most popular right now. Not too expensive, but quite approaches the same level of elegance of the pure Piña cloth.

There are other less formal versions of the Barong Tagalog: The Gusot-Mayaman (usually used as everyday office wear), The Polo Barong and the Shirt-Jack Barong.

Whatever it is, the Barong Tagalog is a significant fashion but often overlooked fashion contribution by its overall elegance and its cultural origin. Peasant Shirt? Ha!

Some of us have read the commentary, Future of Singapore, by Derek Wee, a 35 year old Singaporean. The commentary has made its rounds in cyberspace and is reproduced below for those who might not have come across it yet.

The purpose of this thread is to highlight a response to Derek Wee's commentary from a very bright RJC girl. The response is taken from her blog. She shares the same surname as Derek. Her academic achievements are impressive. She was from the elite gifted program at RGS who went on to top Singapore in the GCE 'O'-levels in 2004. She also won the Prime Minister's Book Prize for purportedly being effectively bilingual in Chinese and English (even though she often expresses her disdain for the Chinese language). And she is fluent in French. Her dad is one of the men-in-white. Naturally, hers is a highly affluent and privileged background. And without doubt too, hers is the perfect pedigree for joining the ranks of the highest echelons of the government.

mom's friend sent her some blog post by some bleeding stupid 40-year old singaporean called derek wee (WHY do all the idiots have my surname why?!) whining about how singapore is such an insecure place, how old ppl (ie, 40 and above) fear for their jobs, how the pool of foreign "talent" (dismissively chucked between inverted commas) is really a tsunami that will consume us all (no actually he didn't say that, he probably said Fouren Talern Bery Bad.), how the reason why no one wants kids is that they're a liability in this world of fragile ricebowls, how the government really needs to save us from inevitable doom but they aren't because they are stick-shoved-up-ass elites who have no idea how the world works, yadayadayadayada.

i am inclined - too much, perhaps - to dismiss such people as crackpots. stupid crackpots. the sadder class. too often singaporeans - both the neighborhood poor and the red-taloned socialites - kid themselves into believing that our society, like most others, is compartmentalized by breeding. ridiculous. we are a tyranny of the capable and the clever, and the only other class is the complement.

sad derek attracted more than 50 comments praising him for his poignant views, joining him in a chorus of complaints that climax at the accusation of lack of press freedom because his all-too-true views had been rejected by the straits times forum. while i tend to gripe about how we only have one functioning newspaper too, i think the main reason for its lack of publication was that his incensed diatribe was written in pathetic little scraps that passed off as sentences, with poor spelling and no grammar.

derek, derek, derek darling, how can you expect to have an iron ricebowl or a solid future if you cannot spell?

if you're not good enough, life will kick you in the balls. that's just how things go. there's no point in lambasting the government for making our society one that is, i quote, "far too survival of fittest". it's the same everywhere. yes discrimination exists, and it is sad, but most of the time if people would prefer hiring other people over you, it's because they're better. it's so sad when people like old derek lament the kind of world that singapore will be if we make it so uncertain. go be friggin communist, if uncertainty of success offends you so much - you will certainly be poor and miserable. unless you are an arm-twisting commie bully, which, given your whiny middle-class undereducated penchant, i doubt.

then again, it's easy for me to say. my future isn't certain but i guess right now it's a lot brighter than most people's. derek will read this and brand me as an 18-year old elite, one of the sinners who will inherit the country and run his stock to the gutter. go ahead. the world is about winners and losers. it's only sad when people who could be winners are marginalised and oppressed. is dear derek starving? has dear derek been denied an education? has dear derek been forced into child prostitution? has dear derek had his clan massacred by the government?

i should think not. dear derek is one of many wretched, undermotivated, overassuming leeches in our country, and in this world. one of those who would prefer to be unemployed and wax lyrical about how his myriad talents are being abandoned for the foreigner's, instead of earning a decent, stable living as a sales assistant. it's not even about being a road sweeper. these shitbags don't want anything without "manager" and a name card.

When I read the Straits Times article (dated 24 Sep) on PM Lee calling the young to be committed and make a difference to Singapore, I have so much thought about the issue.

I am 35 years old, graduated from University and gainfully employed in a multinational company. But I cannot help but feel insecure over the future of Singapore. Lets face it, it's not uncommon to hear, "when you are above 40, you are over the hill".

The government has been stressing on re-training, skills upgrading and re-adapt. The fact is, no matter how well qualified or adaptable one is, once you hit the magical 40, employers will say, "you are simply too old".

We have been focusing our resources and problem solving on low unskilled labour. But in reality, our managerial positions and skilled labour force are actually fast losing its competitiveness.

I travel around the region frequently for the past 10 years. It didn't take me long to realise how far our neighbours have come over the past decade.

They have quality skilled workers, and are less expensive. When I work with them, their analytical skills are equally good, if not better than us.

It's not new anymore. Taxi drivers are fast becoming "too early to retire, too old to work" segment of the society. I like to talk to taxi drivers whenever I am heading for the airport.

There was this driver. Eloquent and well read. He was an export manager for 12 years with an MNC. Retrenched at 40 years old. He had been searching for a job since his retrenchment.

Although he was willing to lower his pay expectations, employers were not willing to lower their prejudice. He was deemed too old. I wouldn't be surprised if we have another No. 1; having the most highly educated taxi drivers in the world.

On PM Lee calling the young to be committed and make a difference. Look around us. How dedicated can we be to Singapore when we can visualise what's in store for us after we turned 40? Then again, how committed are employers to us? But we can't blame them. They have bottom lines & shareholders' gain to answer to.

Onus is really on the government to revamp the society. A society that is not a pressure cooker. A society that does not mirror so perfectly, what survival of the fittest is.

But a society, where it's people can be committed, do their best and not having to fear whether they will still wake up employed tomorrow. Sadly, Singapore does not offer such luxuries and security anymore.

On the issue of babies. The government encourages us to pro-create. The next generation is essential in sustaining our competitive edge. Then again, the current market condition is such that our future has become uncertain. There is no more joy in having babies anymore; they have become more of a liability. It's really a chicken and egg issue.

Many of my peers, bright and well educated have packed up and left. It's what MM Goh called "quitters". It's sad but true, Singapore no longer is a place where one can hope to work hard their lives and retire graciously. It's really the push factor.

A future is something we sweat it out, build and call our own. Unfortunately, people like me, mid 30's going on 40's, staying put by choice or otherwise, we can't help but feel what lies ahead is really a gamble.

To PM Lee and the Ministers, we are on a different platform. Until you truly understand our insecurity, the future of Singapore to me remains a question mark.

UP Pep Squad Rocks!

(To give a heads up for my foreign friends- The Philippines being a heavily Americanized country - carried on the tradition of tight school rivalries mostly when it comes to sporting events- We have the Ateneo-La Salle basketball rivalry and the UP-UST Cheerdancing Rivalry):


Okay, let me gloat for a while. Like a popular line in UP, there are only two schools in the Philippines - UP and Others. (hehehe).

(from wiki) The word Maroon comes from the Spanish word cimarron which means wild: untamed. They were slaves who either ran away from or were released by the Spanish before the English invaded Jamaica in 1655. They were successful in retaining their independence after 150 years of slavery by constantly defending their freedom. Their settlements were small, not more than 2,000 strong, but they fought as if they were in greater numbers.


For me, UP Pep Squad has been  and always been the best pep squad in the Philippines (Sorry Bobcats - but you guys will never be in our league - the National Cheer Compete should have sent UP Pep for the Asian Finals if they expected to a win a medal). Why? Simple, UST Salinggawi is a Dance Troupe - and the bemedalled Bayanihan Dancers has already kicked their asses by thousands of kilometers. I am sorry if  I will be a bit harsh, I have friends from UST but of course, but my loyalties will forever remain with the best university in the Philippines - the University of the Philippines. Call it UP arrogance, we Maroons call it boundless passion characterized by the fearless, intelligent and principled excellence that our University has stood for 99 years now. Next year, UP will host the UAAP Season 71 to coincide with the Centennial of the University's founding - and damn, every Maroon far and wide will come home and support the home team!

UP pep squad is 2007 UAAP cheer dance champion!!!


The University of the Philippines (UP) Pep Squad won Sunday the 2007 UAAP Cheerdance Competitions, dethroning erstwhile champion the University of Santo Tomas (UST) Salinggawi Dance Troupe by a mere margin before a full-house crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.

UP, which last tasted a cheerdance title in 2001, brought home a trophy and the top prize of P172,500 after they garnered an over-all score of 92.66 points.

The UP Pep Squad were nearly flawless all throughout their performance, banking on their rock-themed routine matched by their maroon and black get up.

"We wanted something unique. Rock is something gloomy," narrated UP pep squad team captain Andrea Gonzales.

"We used it in a fun and more exciting way," she added.

The UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe (SDT), which bagged the cheerdance title five-straight times from 2002 to 2006, settled for second place this time, finishing second place to UP with an over-all score of 93.61 points, or just 0.5 points behind the champs.

With their bumblebee-inspired attire, the SDT was its usual efficient self where they danced to "The Hustle" with the female members wearing golden wigs.

The Salinggawi Dance Troupe grabbed a trophy and a total cash prize of P108,500 for the feat.

Far Eastern University Pep Squad (FEUPS), meanwhile, grabbed third place with a score of 91.66 points.

The "Happy Feet"-motivated routine brought the house down while the monkey bar pyramid provided innovation in FEU pep squad's set. The FEUPS bagged a trophy and P69,000 prize money for placing third.

The criteria for the competition were 50 percent for choreography, 30 percent for synchronization, 10 percent for audience audibility and 10 percent for costume.



The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Bubble Battalion finished fourth, Adamson University Pep Squad fifth, University of the East Pep Squad sixth, De La Salle University (DLSU) Pep Squad seventh and the National University (NU) Pep Squad eighth.

An estimated 18,000 UAAP fans trooped to the Big Dome to watch the cheering event live. Tickets for the event has been sold out as early as last week. - GMANews.TV
